Now we know what’s confirmed for next year so let’s take a look
at the top 30 most anticipated new movies of 2013. While it doesn’t
quite match this year for exciting titles, it is the biggest ever for
science-fiction and there are many intriguing prospects. Will these be

30th – After Earth
Starring: Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Isabelle Fuhrman, Zoe Kravitz
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Out: June 7, 2013 (U.S. Release Dates)
A father (Will Smith) and son (Jaden Smith) crash land on Earth, one thousand years after it has been abandoned by mankind. The father is captured by a remaining Earth-dwelling force, leading his son to find and save him in what has become a strange and dangerous place. After so many dreadful movies it’s amazing director M. Night Shyamalan can still secure a star like Will Smith. Smith is the only reason this is on the list, as a producer and global star he has significant control of creative aspects and is rarely associated with anything too awful. Also Shyamalan is less involved with the script this time.
29th – The Last Stand
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville
Director: Kim Jee-Woon
Out: January 18, 2013
A notorious drug cartel leader (Norieg) escapes a FBI prisoner convoy and speeds to the Mexico border with his gang, where the only thing in his path is a sheriff (Schwarzenegger) and his inexperienced staff. Besides from the impressive list of character actors on board, this is the English language debut of impressive Korean director Kim Jee-Woon (‘I Saw the Devil’, ‘A Tale Of Two Sisters’), and his cinematographer. It doesn’t seem like his genre (not very dark material) so it’s hard to know what will emerge. But this is Schwarzenegger’s first leading man role in 10 years and any movie fan has to be curious about the mix.
28th – Riddick
Starring: Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Mollà
Director: David Twohy
Out: September 6, 2013
Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien beasts and becomes more powerful than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on him, only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. From the writer-director of the two previous movies, expect a similar experience to ‘Chronicles’, only it’ll be rated R like ‘Pitch Black’. Karl Urban reprises his role as Vaako from ‘Chronicles’, though some reports say only briefly, and the bounty hunters include ‘Battlestar Galactica’s’ Katee Sackhoff. Hard to believe it’s been 9 years since the last installment.
27th – Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson
Director: Francis Lawrence
Out: November 22, 2013
Returning home, Katniss (Lawrence) and Peeta (Hutcherson) try to forget their time in the arena. But all is not well; rebellion is simmering. As they embark on the Victors Tour of the districts, Katniss has to prove that her act to save both herself and Peeta in the arena was not that of defiance against the Capitol, but one of love for him. Meanwhile, the President (Sutherland) prepares a special Hunger Games made up of previous victors, to show his people who is ultimately in control. The production has added some serious class since the first movie (which I thought compared poorly with ‘Battle Royale’) – this one’s being adapted by Simon Beaufoy (‘Slumdog Millionaire’) and Michael Arndt (‘Little Miss Sunshine’), has the director of ‘I Am Legend’, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is joining the cast. Everything in the arena will be filmed in IMAX. Expect a more polished, grander-scale rerun of the first film.
26th – The Wolverine
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova
Director: James Mangold
Out: July 26, 2013
An adaptation of Frank Miller’s classic 1982 comic book arc, this sees Wolverine heading to Japan where he falls for the daughter of a Japanese crime lord and goes up against Silver Samurai (Lee) and Viper (Khodchenkova). We’re told to expect different forms of martial arts – mano-a-mano, extreme fighting. Jackman says “It’s a world full of honour, tradition and customs and Wolverine’s obviously someone who’s really anti-all of that, trying to negotiate his way. He gets his ass kicked by a couple of samurai – not even mutants. He’s shocked by that at first.” Coming from a solid director (James Mangold, ’3:10 To Yuma’) and writer (Christopher McQuarrie, ‘The Usual Suspects’) this sounds different enough to erase the underwhelming memory of ‘Origins’.
25th – Oblivion
Starring: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Melissa Leo

In a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. Jak (Cruise) is a repairman, not a policeman. It’s just that one of his tools is a firearm, and his job is to look after the surface world on behalf of the 1-percent above. But when he finds a woman in a crashed ship, his whole world view comes into question. From the director of ‘Tron: Legacy’, this $130m sci-fi thriller is adapted from his own graphic novel. The script caused a bidding war and the visuals, at least, should be spectacular.
